The Balkans and South-East Europe — Concept Stage

The Balkans and South-East Europe — a network to the MMC standard.

16 corridors linking 39 cities, about 3,700 km measured city to city in straight lines (about 4,400 km built, at a route factor of 1.2), with 18 cross-border links and crossings. Ljubljana and Zagreb to Belgrade, Sofia and Istanbul on the Eurasian Spine; the Adriatic coast; Bucharest and the Black Sea; and Thessaloniki to Athens.

The corridors.

Each corridor is listed below in order of its cities.

Routes are indicative. Corridors are drawn city to city, through the cities on the existing railway wherever a line exists: MMC corridors follow those lines, upgrading the line or running above it on viaduct. Where no line exists, the corridor is new build. Final alignments are set at detailed design by terrain survey, geotechnical analysis, environmental and cultural heritage assessment, and agreement between the nations they connect.
